Happenings at the Mineola Nature Preserve:
Wood County Master Gardener Wildscape Project
Master Gardeners cover the wildscape area with plastic to burn off unwanted seeds and insects before planting. |
||||
The Wood County Master Gardeners have cleaned up the wildscape area, preparing to put it to sleep for the winter. The City has supplied mulch material for the beds and for future areas that are being planned now. The benches were constructed, donated and placed by the retirees of Vought Aviation. These benches follow the design created by Aldo Leopold himself. They’re perfect for bird watching. Here’s your sign Future area for wildflower meadow Welcome

The Project continues: Sheet Mulching -- Phase one.
The beginning of area preparation for the wildflower area. Thank goodness for the benches. The Wood County Master Gardeners are hard at work transforming this poor soil into a rich bed to manage a meadow of wildflowers.
Raw materials are brought in. Sheet mulching is also called Lasagna mulch because the materials are layered over each other. Each layer performs a different function.
It’s a slow process but the Master Gardeners are making headway.
The members are in for a long week, but are certain they can make this a wonderful place to spend the day.
More raw materials are being brought in for seperation.
A plan is made and details are discussed.
Modeling the latest in Gardening Chic.
The not so secret ingredient, hey-hey-and more hay.
Placing an information sheet about the sensory garden at the pavilion.
Phase one complete except for the wetting of the compost. For more information about Sheet (layering) composting, and information about joining the Wood County Master Gardeners, email our webmaster or see their link on the links page. |

Turn-of-the-century log cabin We will be moving and reconstructing a turn of the century log cabin to be placed south of the wildscape. This will be at least a year long project. Check back often to see our progress. |
