The Friends of the Preserve
Our current project is developing a system of mountain bike trails. The trails are located near the eastern border of the Preserve at Greer Hill. No dirt work is being done, only clearing limbs and debris from the proposed trails.
Later we will be looking at installing some creek/drainage crossings and adding some difficulty to the trails. We are always looking for help with our projects, so if you can spare a few hour with us, it will be well worth your time.

Past Projects
This Wild Flower area was developed by the Wood County Master Gardeners with funds donated by the Friends of the Preserve.
A $1500.00 donation from the Friends of the Preserve enabled the WCMG to purchase and erect this work shed as well as purchase needed tools for their continued work at the Preserve.
One way the WCMG gain assets is by selling Memorial Stones that are placed in the garden area. These stones bare the names of departed family and friends that visited and loved the Preserve.
From left to right: Jim Walker from the Tyler Bicycle Club was kind enough to advise us rookies. Those rookies are:
Jay Heppner (FOTP), volunteer Art Gould and Larry Jones of the Parks Board . Not shown, but with us from the start is Dwayne Cleveland of the Kiwanis.
Slow but steady work is being done to get at least the outer trail ready for this summer. We hope everyone will find something just for them on the trails, from a leisurely pace for most, to some exciting dips and twists for the more experienced riders.
Update 5/18/2010 - The city will be working with a land enhancement firm to get some of the more dense areas cleared for the trails. Timing will be worked out so the firm will move it’s equipment to Mineola as they are in route to another job. Once this is complete we hope to announce the opening of the dedicated bike trails sometime in July. Further improvements will be continued by volunteers to develop the trails for the more hardy riders.
Update 6/11/2010—Work has been completed on the outer most trails. Thanks to some great work by Land Enhancement out of Lindale. The day after the work was done I took my old bike out and road the loop. I’m not a young man and my bike has seen better days but I was pleased with the shape and condition of the trails. There are places that will challenge the young and old (myself) to get up some of the hills, but overall it was a nice ride.
Be looking in the local papers for more info on how to get to the trails and when we have our first open ride for the public. Thanks again to the volunteers that did such a good job.
Finally: Found that picture of Dwayne and Larry clearing trail. That sapling didn’t stand a chance against those two.
Update 7/19/2010—We are looking to have an organized ride in the near future when the weather cools a little. If you have a group that would like to sponsor a ride, please contact the FOTP to make plans on dates and times.
Also, if you are riding the trails be careful because there has been horse riders on the trails and we don’t want any accidents. We are working on how to ensure the safety of both horse and bike riders.
